Introduction to our Trustees
Trustees do not manage the school day-to-day – that is the job of the Headteacher – but they provide strategic support and monitoring for the two key areas of school life, curriculum and finance. Trustees in an academy school like Gretton operate in a similar way to a board of directors. Trustees' responsibilities can be split into three core roles:
- To support and challenge school decisions, particularly where they impact on standards of learning.
- To provide strategic management and to monitor progress so that the school can continue to develop and improve and can do so with sound finances.
- To make executive decisions, e.g. admissions, staffing, health & safety.
Who are our trustees?
Our trustee board is made up of volunteers from staff, parents and the local community who freely donate their time, expertise and enthusiasm to help the school be the best it can be. Trustees have a range of different specialisms and experience. This balance of skills and interests is key to successful teamwork between governors and brings relevant knowledge to the committees. The Headteacher is always a member of the body.
As we are a small school, we operate as a ‘Full Trustee Body’ committee. Trustee working parties are established to address specific issues as they arise. There are six Full Trustee meetings a year lasting about two hours each.
Trustees Responsibilities
- Monitor standards and other curriculum matters, including statutory requirements
- Review school policies and performance management arrangements
- Ensure the well-being and safeguarding of pupils and staff
- Uphold equality policies and SEN provision
- Oversee the setting of the school budget and monitor expenditure
- Monitor financial procedures and reporting
- Review school policies including pay and other statutory requirements
- Maintain the school premises and monitor H&S compliance
All trustees are linked to curriculum subjects where they carry out a monitoring role.

Adam is a Trustee Chair appointed in January 2022. He has spent over 20 years working in Engineering and Technology. Adam originally qualified as an Engineer before moving in to Business Management and completing a MBA. He brings expertise in Strategy, Organisational Transformation, Programme Management, Enterprise Risk and Health & Safety. Adam has a passion for the outdoors, especially if it involves climbing, canoeing, kayaking, skiing or scuba diving and is the Assistant County Commissioner (ACC) for Gloucestershire Scouts responsible for Adventurous Activities.
Susan Maxted is a Co-Opted Governor and has been a Governor since November 2019. Susan qualified as a primary school teacher in 1990 and taught for 5 years before setting up a day nursery in Leicestershire, which she has run for the past 24 years. She has three grown-up children, and particularly enjoys travelling when she and her husband can spare the time. She brings considerable knowledge and experience from running her own childcare/education-based business and managing a team of 20+ staff.
Richard Byng is a Co-opted Governor. Since 2005, Richard has worked exclusively in the engineering sector and, as a result, is the governor who represents STEM within the school. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his family and cycling.
Carolyn Scott was appointed as a Co-opted Governor in May 2022. She has been in primary education for over 25 years, over half of this time spent as a headteacher. She has worked for three different local authorities, gaining a vast amount of experience in management. She is also the governor of a PRU in Worcestershire. She has 7 grandchildren and spends her free time travelling the length and breadth of the country visiting them.
